Director, Front Office Technology Lead

Our client seeks an adept leader for their Front Office Information Technology team. The ideal candidate will boast a robust background in programming and quantitative analysis, driven by a fervor for applying technology to resolve business challenges. This pivotal role involves direct collaboration with trading teams, focusing on the development, maintenance, and support of trading and analytics solutions. The successful candidate will possess strong independent work capabilities while fostering collaboration across the client's trading desks and IT departments. This position reports to the Head of IT and is based in our client's Boston, MA office.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with FTR traders, analysts, power traders, and originators to grasp existing platforms, trading models, and datasets, while developing software to bolster commercial activities across key market dynamics.
  • Lead requirement gathering, design, and development efforts to fortify models, algorithms, data pipelines, and reporting solutions for power flow, economic dispatch, and power price simulations.
  • Engineer cloud-native solutions to facilitate integration within the client's IT framework across North American commodity markets.
  • Oversee management, troubleshooting, and enhancement of trading models and data collectors utilized by the FTR trading team, focusing on transmission power flows, economic dispatch, and statistical simulations.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for enhancing trading strategies and systems through the exploration of new datasets and tools, fostering a culture of research and innovation.


  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Quantitative Finance, Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent field.
  • 10+ years of professional programming experience within Power or other Commodities technology teams.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, Matlab, C++, .Net, Java, or similar programming environments, with modern data structures, analysis, and visualization tools.
  • Experience in modern cloud-based environments and DevOps practices, with familiarity in Microsoft Azure tools being advantageous.
  • Proficient in traditional and cloud-based database systems - Relational SQL and NoSQL.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Results-oriented team player with exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Passion for technology and a commitment to staying abreast of industry trends.
  • Fast learner with adaptability to dynamic environments and excellent time management skills.


Desired Experience:

  • Hands-on programming experience within the power industry and power trading.
  • Familiarity with US ISO power markets and FTR trading (PJM, CAISO, NYISO, MISO, SPP, ERCOT).
  • Experience with industry-standard power transmission analysis and data platforms.
  • Proficiency in DevOps practices including CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Git, Containers (Docker), Kubernetes, Microservices, and messaging bus architectures.


$200-$230k base plus bonus
